While sin may be secret, it is never private.   When I fail to be what God wants me to be, then not only is my link in the chain weakened but the strength of the community chain is weakened.
The purpose of the sacrament of reconciliation is to help us celebrate and deepen our ongoing efforts to be people of reconciliation in our world.   Therefore, participation in this sacrament assumes that we are making sincere efforts in our daily lives to become more Christlike and are trying to fulfill our call to be ambassadors of reconciliation.
Participation in this sacrament also infers that, as God freely forgives us our transgressions, we too are willing to freely give and receive forgiveness.¹
